The Dakar Rally is back for its 47th edition, and organizers unveiled the details on November 28, promising one of the most challenging routes yet. Kicking off on January 3 with a demanding 29-kilometer prologue, the race begins in Bisha the following day. It spans 7,700 kilometers, including over 5,100 kilometers of timed specials. The showdown will occur amidst the towering dunes of the Empty Quarter, culminating in Shubaytah on January 17.

With over 340 entries, the race features big names like Nasser Al Attiyah and Ross Branch, vintage Dakar Classic vehicles, and cutting-edge prototypes from the Mission 1000 Challenge. The new Saudi Next Gen initiative will spotlight emerging local talent, offering the best-performing crew a coveted spot in the 2026 race.

Hunter Miller (Can-Am Off-Road, USA) for rallyraids.com:

“The presentation was awesome! I am definitely excited to learn about a new form of racing, and there was so much information to soak in! The 48-hour Chrono stage and the marathon stage sound awesome! I’ve never done anything like that, but it seems like it will be the hardest part of the race, so it’s nice to get it done early.”

Key Innovations for 2025

Dakar 2025 introduces groundbreaking features designed to push the boundaries of endurance racing:

• 48H Chrono Stage: Debuting last year, this grueling two-day stage returns with increased mileage and diverse terrain. Competitors must manage time strategically, choosing rest bivouacs wisely while racing nearly 1,000 kilometers. The clock doesn’t stop for rest, sleep, or mechanical repairs, making this a test of speed and mental stamina.

• Marathon Stage: Following the 48H Chrono, this classic test demands self-reliance over two days, with competitors navigating without external support.

• Separate FIA and FIM Routes: For the first time, 45% of the timed distance will feature separate courses for cars and motorbikes, enhancing safety while challenging navigators to rely entirely on their skills. This setup reduces overtakes, improving flow and allowing riders and co-pilots to perform at their peak.

Max Eddy Jr. (Polaris Factory Racing, USA) for rallyraids.com:

“The route looks interesting. Really excited for the split routes between the bikes and cars. It should make for some good racing. The 48H Chrono right at the rally’s start is going to be good.”

A Race Like No Other

The 2025 Dakar epitomizes the spirit of adventure. Competitors will traverse remote deserts, endure minimalistic bivouacs, and face relentless challenges, from the punishing Empty Quarter dunes to the logistical puzzles of strategic stages. Each twist in the route demands ingenuity, endurance, and adaptability.

As the opening race for the World Rally Raid Championship, Dakar 2025 sets the tone for an intense season, with subsequent events in Abu Dhabi, South Africa, Portugal, and Morocco.

By reimagining its stages and amplifying the difficulty, Dakar 2025 cements its reputation as the ultimate proving ground—where only the most prepared can emerge victorious.
