American Spirit: Veterans and Young Guns Unite for the Podium
American riders bring experience, skill, and determination to the 2025 Dakar, aiming to solidify their dominance in the bike category. With stage wins, podium finishes, and even a championship under their belts, two Californians and a Utah native are poised to deliver a fierce challenge to their rivals.
Ricky Brabec, the first American to win the Dakar, debuted in 2016 with a strong ninth-place finish. Despite withdrawals in 2017 and 2019, he claimed stage wins in both years before cementing his place in history with a stunning overall victory in 2020. His persistence paid off again in 2024 when he clinched his second title, and now, with unmatched focus, he sets his sights on a third.
Skyler Howes, Brabec’s teammate from Utah, has five Dakars under his belt. A top-five finish in 2021 and a podium in 2023 showcased his potential. “If you finish on the Dakar podium, you can probably win it,” he says, underscoring his relentless drive. Although a withdrawal cut short his 2024 campaign, Howes is more determined than ever to achieve the ultimate prize in 2025.
Meanwhile, Mason Klein, a rising star from California, is already making waves. In 2022, he mirrored Brabec’s and Howes’ early successes by finishing ninth in his debut. Despite a crash in 2023 and technical challenges in 2024, Klein has shown resilience. With renewed preparation and a hunger to prove himself, the young rider is ready to climb higher in 2025.
The bike category at Dakar 2025 promises fierce competition, and American riders are integral to the action. Veterans will defend their legacies, while emerging talents push the limits to claim their place among the elite. At Dakar, where every mile is a battle, becoming number one is not just a goal—it’s a trial by fire.
