Following technical challenges, the Argentinian-American racer focuses on a new Can-Am R model and a winning return in 2026.
As some racers gear up for Dakar 2025, others reconsider their participation. Following a challenging performance at the Rally du Maroc, Argentinian-American racer Pablo Copetti has opted to skip the upcoming Dakar. Instead, alongside the MMP Team, he’ll focus on preparing for Dakar 2026.
With an impressive record that includes three podium finishes and seven stage wins at the Dakar Rally, Copetti has repeatedly proven his skill. Originally from Argentina, he moved to the United States over a decade ago and became an American citizen in 2019. Now racing for Team USA, Copetti is dedicated to securing off-road victories worldwide, showcasing his determination across borders.
Copetti competed in the Dakar Rally’s Quads category for thirteen years, establishing himself as a standout racer. A recent rule change by the organizers, A.S.O., led him to switch to the car category, and this year, he raced in an SSV class with co-driver Santiago Hansen for MMP Competition.
Unfortunately, Copetti’s debut race with MMP in Morocco didn’t go as planned. He faced multiple technical issues with the UTV, and the team struggled to keep up with top competitors. “Despite the challenges, I was impressed by the team’s hard work and commitment to improvement, which is a good sign for the future,” Copetti said. He highlighted the need for better suspension on his Can-Am X3 model to match the performance of the R models used by the South Racing team.
Initially, Copetti planned to travel to France for vehicle modifications and further testing in the dunes. However, after discussions with his team, he decided to set his sights on Dakar 2026.
“We have a real chance to win with a competitive car,” Copetti explained. “When I raced in the quad class, the rider made the difference—70% rider and 30% vehicle. In the UTV class, it’s the opposite; the car is almost 70% of the equation.” He added, “The X3 just isn’t up to competing with the R model, so our goal is to build an R model for next year and test it in the World Cup race in South Africa in May.”
Copetti also noted the advantages of the R model, pointing out improvements in chassis, suspension, and acceleration. “The time difference in the Morocco Rally was huge,” he said. “I race the Dakar to win, and my best shot is with a new Can-Am R.” He further expressed confidence in his current team, saying, “I like working with MMP and prefer sticking with them over trying with another team.”
With a new plan and the full support of MMP, Copetti is determined to return to Dakar stronger than ever in 2026. His decision reflects his commitment to excellence, proving that sometimes stepping back is necessary in rally raids to achieve greatness. As he prepares to test his new R model in South Africa, fans will watch closely, hopeful that this choice will pave the way for an unforgettable comeback.
